Research

These past few weeks we have been working on our non-fiction unit in Writer's Workshop. Last week we started learning about different types of ways to gather research on a specific topic. We learned how to use the internet, encyclopedias, and non-fiction books to gather information.

On Monday we selected our individual topics (animals or insects) and completed KWL charts. A KWL chart has three columns. In the K column, students wrote information that they already knew about their topic. In the W column, they formed questions that they wondered about their chosen topic. To complete the L column (learned) we visited the Media Center.

Tuesday and Wednesday we went to the Media Center and Mrs. Massey worked with us on researching our topics. On Tuesday, Mrs. Massey pulled non-fiction books and we searched for the answers to our questions. On Wednesday we continued using non-fiction books to find interesting facts. We also began using the internet to find more information than the non-fiction books provided. We enjoyed our research so much we returned on Thursday!

I am SO proud of these kids and how hard they have worked. You can see the effort and concentration on their faces in these pictures. Thanks Mrs. Massey for working with us and making our research a great learning experience.
